Ministry At First Lutheran

The people of First  Lutheran, with assistance from the pastors, are the primary caregivers in the congregation. Christian caregiving is offered through First Lutheran in the following ways:

  • Chaplains: This group makes hospital visits from Friday-Monday in partnership with the pastors. Contacts: Pastor Jay, Pastor Charlie – 292-9125

  • Home Communion Teams are for people who are unable to attend worship, either long-term or short term. Contacts: Bob Gobble – 292-3434, Ellenor Shepherd – 292-1398T

  • The Prayer Group meets on Wednesdays. If you have a care concern, leave a request in the Evangelism box in the church office. Contact: Bess Morgan.  Much of the information for  this group is from the Prayer Concern Board near the church office. Also, there are prayers in worship for people on this board, in addition to others.

The Health Ministry Team offers screenings and other health-related events to bolster the connection between body, mind and spirit. Contact: Lelia Moore – 272-2627, Tommie Arnold – 855-6505

Pastors: They offer crisis care (hospital, grieving and traumatic situations) and pastoral counseling.

FACEOUT, a group for older adults, meets on Tuesdays for a program, fellowship and a meal. Contact: Ellie Schlentz – 856-2244, Bess Morgan – 454-5426 - meals, Frances Daily – 286-5152  - programs.

HomeTouch, a monthly collection of meaningful devotions and stimulating word games, is sent to some homebound members. It is intended to show that the church wants to maintain a  connection to people who cannot attend worship. Contact: Frank Moore – 292-9125

Knitting Ministry: Three groups knit shawls for those who have experienced trauma . Contact: Ellenor Shepherd - 292-1398 or Jo Fleck – 664-0480.

Quilting Group: This group makes quilts for people in Greensboro and around the world. Contact: Doris Hansen – 545-7568

  • Emergency Assistance, Pastors' Discretionary Fund: Through your contributions to these funds, people struggling with financial difficulties such as rent, utilities, medical bills are  helped. Both funds are available for FLC members, although the EA fund typically is used more for the wider community, and the PD fund is more often used for members. Contact Frank Moore  for EA needs and the pastors for PD needs.

  • And, of course, a wide variety of caregiving takes place in faith formation classes, circles, small groups, musical groups and through relationships that cannot be categorized but are  immensely meaningful and valuable. These include spontaneous acts of compassion when members learn of a need. Also, many people volunteer in areas such as Greensboro Urban Ministry,  Mobile Meals, HealthServe, and Shepherd's Center.

Did you know...

Cover

Nearly $900 has been raised for Greensboro Urban Ministry from sales of "The Littlest Knitter"
by FLC member Ellenor Shepherd!

In the story, Grace learns from her grandmother about the joy of serving others by discovering that her  special gift of a healing prayer shawl - with God's help - makes someone feel better.  Books are $8;  proceeds go to GUM. Books are available in the church office or from Frank Moore, 292-9125 X 102.

Look how the purchases can add up to help someone! Just $5 provides a Weaver House bed for a day +  $25 provides a bed for a week + $30 provides a bag of food for a hungry family + $50 provides a week of meals for a person at Potter's House, and the possibilities go on ...

Also, Ellenor would be happy to tell you about the church's Healing Prayer Shawl Ministry, meeshep@bellsouth.net, 299-1398, and her website is  www.booksbyshepherd.com.
