Pastor Charles M. Zimmerman Senior Pastor
The work of being the Senior Pastor of a large Lutheran church is both exciting and challenging. It is exciting because I work with
volunteers and a gifted staff, and I experience working as a community in Christ. It is challenging because it has caused me to learn to delegate responsibilities, to supervise staff and to live
within my time and ability limits. I am in my 27th year of ordination, with the last 21 years being at First Lutheran Church. My wife and I have a 30-year marriage, and our two sons are happy in their
respective schools. As with other families, we struggle to allow time for all our school and church activities, but our life together is a good one. charlie@firstlutheran

Pastor John S. "Jay" Hilbinger Pastor
I grew up in and around Baltimore, MD, and received my B.S. degree in Business Administration from UNCG in 1984. I began serving First
Lutheran in January, 1997, after 7 years with Ebenezer Lutheran in Columbia, SC, where I earned my M. Div. degree at Lutheran Seminary in 1989. One of my favorite Bible stories is Mark 9:14-29, in which the
father of a boy who needs healing says to Jesus, "I believe; Help my unbelief!" A favorite quote from Martin Luther (one which we all
struggle with) is, "The church exists in a constant state of reform." Along with sharing the pastoral ministry of FLC, my primary staff
responsibilities include Contemporary Worship planning (along with Susan Klaiber) and Adult Discipleship ministries. My wife, Cindy, is a teacher, and our daughter,
Katie Bess, is 15 years old. For leisure and recreation I enjoy music, movies, cooking, tennis and basketball. jay@firstlutheran.com |
Frank Moore Director of Congregational Mission
Congregational Mission is a grab bag of ministries that have kept me on my toes since joining the staff in 1990. This vocation ranges from
helping new members discover a place to offer their talents to finding money to help a needy person in the community. When not working, I try to keep up with wife Lisa, who is Administrative Manager for
Univar, and two daughters, Christina and Catherine, who is attending Carolina. I like to see the Tar Heels win! I graduated from Carolina in 1978. . frank@firstlutheran.com |
Karen Brown Director of Music Ministries Director of This year I celebrate five years at First Lutheran as Director
of Music Ministries! I grew up in a Lutheran parsonage, received my Bachelor of Sacred Music Degree from Wittenberg University, my First
Level Certificate from the Musikschule in Berlin, Germany, and my Master of Sacred Music Degree from Southern Methodist University.
I have served in several denominations and am pleased to now be working in the denomination in which I grew up! My husband Jim teaches Latin at Murphy Traditional Academy; we have two grown sons, James
and Mark, who have recently moved to North Carolina and live close enough that we get to see them fairly regularly. When I'm not 'on the job', I love to read, do
needlework, and spend time relaxing and playing with our sweet dog, Molly.

Susan Klaiber Director of Contemporary Music
I was born and raised in the Buckeye State, and graduated from Capital University in Columbus with a music degree. In 1972 I moved to the
Cornhusker State and lived there for 17 years, both in the eastern and western portions of the state. I became a Tarheel when my family moved
here in 1990. Over the years, I have tried many occupations, but my greatest love (after motherhood) is church music. As a result of this love, I have been involved with the music programs of seven diverse
congregations, using my talents in many areas of music. I have four children: Kathryn married to Brad, Deborah and Adam, a grandson, and a
granddaugher. I am employed full-time at UnivarUSA.. To email Susan, click here. |
Janice Eberenz Director of Office and Finance
I came to work at First Lutheran 15 years ago as the part-time bookkeeper. Little did I know where this simple job would lead! At my
first performance review, I remember telling Pastor Charlie, "I just love to work with money!", to which he responded, "Well, we all have our
gifts." When the membership secretary retired in 1991, I was asked to take over the membership records, and when the Administrator retired in
1996, I took over management of the property, office and finances. With a new property committee and Building and Grounds Supervisor established in 1999, I've come full circle and am back to my first love -
MONEY! I am married with son at UNCG, as well as a grown stepson and daughter-in-law and 3 granddaughters!. janice@firstlutheran.com |
