  Teacher and Staff Profiles - First Lutheran School for Young Children

Jan Mortimore, Co-Director, SFYC
Educational Director
Jan Mortimore is the Assistant Director at First Lutheran School for Young Children. She has held this position for seven years. Mrs. Mortimore has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Early Elementary Education with graduate work in Reading from Eastern Michigan University. Prior to holding the Assistant Director's position, she was in the two year old classroom at School for Young Children for sixteen years.  Mrs. Mortimore worked at First Baptist for three years in their preschool program, and also taught first and second grade in the public school system prior to joining the staff at School for Young Children. She has been a member of First Lutheran Church for thirty-nine years. In her spare time she volunteers within the community and has taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School.

Dale Langerman has worked at SFYC for eight years and currently serves as the Administrative Director. Dale graduated from North Carolina State University and has an MBA from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.  After college, she worked for Burlington Industries as a manufacturing supervisor and at Western Electric as a Section Chief in the Computer Systems Purchasing Department. 

After being a "stay at home mom" for several years, Dale was employed part time by Guilford County Schools at Guilford Primary School before joining SFYC.

Dale is married and has two sons, ages 17 and 22.  She has been an active PTA volunteer for many years and enjoys reading, walking and playing tennis. 

Heather Reeder, Kindergarten, Lead Teacher, Monday - Friday
Heather Reeder is the lead teacher in our kindergarten program. She is starting her second year with our program. She has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Illinois, and a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction: Reading, from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Prior to School for Young Children, Mrs. Reeder, taught third grade within the public school system. She has been a tutor to students within the community. She is also Certified in English as a Second Language and has taught two Asian adults how to use English in everyday living.

Barbara Sisbarro, Kindergarten, Assistant Teacher, Monday- Friday

Barbara Sisbarro has been teaching at School For Young Children since 2001. She has an Associates Degree in Business Administration from Rochester Institute of Technology. Prior to her work at School for Young Children, Mrs. Sisbarro was a substitute at First Lutheran and tutored at Jefferson Elementary. In her spare time, Mrs. Sisbarro loves to sew, enjoys music, baking, reading, walking, and crafts.

Patricia Hattle, MMO and 4C, Lead Teacher
Patricia Hattle hales from South Africa but has spent the past 5 years in NC.  Her husband, Rex, is a cultural exchange teacher from SA and teaches Gr 7 Math in an inner city Middle School in High Point.  They have 4 daughters aged 27, 25 and 23 old step twin daughters, along with 3 grand-children, who all live in SA who they get to see every Summer when they return home. Patricia ran her own school in SA for 9 years catering to the needs of infants through after-school care and has a total of 14 years teaching experience.  She is presently Lead Teacher for both MMO and 4C, and also works at a nearby After-school care in the afternoons.  Patricia and Rex are avid travellers, having visited Israel, London, Scotland, Amsterdam, Paris, Germany, Prague as well as 20+ states in the USA.  They plan to visit Hawaai and cruise to Alaska at sometime.  She likes to write, play guitar, walk, run, gym, ice-skate, read and baby-sit, while her husband is an avid golfer.  Her philosophy is "to teach is to touch a life forever" and does not take her "calling" lightly .

Rhonda Terrell, MMO and 4C, assistant teacher
Rhonda Terrell has just started this year with SFYC.  She has 3 children and likes to spend time with her family, read and listen to music.  Rhonda volunteered at public school (K-5) and was the PTA President!  She is just starting back to work this year after a 10 year break!

Wendy Richards, Assistant Teacher, 2C
Wendy Richards has just started this year with SFYC. She has 8 years experience in childcare, has substituted here in the past and has volunteered in public school for the past 10 years in her children's classrooms.  She has 3 children and likes to read, cook, go to the movies and camp in her backyard with her kids.  Her family loves animals and often take in strays.  They have 5 cats, 1 dog and an African Tortoise who roams in their backyard.

 

Dianna Whaley, Lead Teacher 2C
Diana Whaley has just started this year with SFYC.  She has 6 years experience teaching preschool (4's and 5's), 7 years in public school (k & 3rd-6 th) and taught HS dance team for 3 years.  She has 2 children and likes Culinary Arts, cooking classes, volunteering at her children's schools, camping and visiting art galleries.  Diana has started graduate school at UNCG this year!

Kathy Walsh, Two Year Olds, Lead Teacher, Monday/Wednesday and Tuesday/Thursday
Kathy Walsh is lead teacher in our two year old program. Mrs. Walsh has been on staff with School for Young Children for ten years. Prior to School for Young Children, Mrs. Walsh taught first and second grade within the public school system. Mrs. Walsh has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from State University College, Oneonta, New York. In her spare time, Mrs. Walsh has taught faith formation to second graders for ten years. She also teaches Vacation Bible School.

Jan Simkins, Two Year Olds, Assistant Teacher, Monday/Wednesday and Tuesday/Thursday
Jan Simkins is assistant teacher in our two year old program. Mrs. Simkins has been on staff of School for Young Children for eight years. Ms Simkins has a Bachelor of Science Degree from University of Iowa in Elementary Education with a specialization in Early Childhood Education. Prior to her work at School for Young Children, Mrs. Simkins worked for five years in other preschool programs and volunteered within the Guilford County School System. Mrs. Simkins has assisted with Vacation Bible School and has taught Faith Formation for ten years. She has also been an Assistant Troop Leader with the Girl Scouts.

Leona Church, Three Year Olds, Lead Teacher,  Tuesday/Thursday
Leona Church is the lead teacher in one of our three year old programs.  Mrs. Church has been with School for Young Children for twelve years.  She has a total of twenty-two years of preschool experience.  Mrs. Church has an AA.S in Early Childhood Education.  She enjoys reading, walking and knitting.

Tammy Mulholland, Three Year Olds,  Assistant Teacher
Tuesday-Thursday
Tammy Mulholland is the assistant teacher in 3 year old program.  She is starting her second year at SFYC.  Prior to coming to SFYC Tammy worked 5 years in Lake Norman in other preschool programs.  In her spare time she walks her lab, reads and volunteer at her children's school in the library and attendance office.

Akemi Fink, Three Year Olds,  Lead Teacher
Tuesday/Thursday/Friday

Akemi graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education.  Two of her 3 children attended SFYC.  She has volunteered at local elementary school for the past 4 years.  Tammy enjoys reading, antiques, and collecting old books 
 

Amy Froneberger, 3 Year Olds, Assistant Teacher, Tuesday/Thursday/Friday

Amy Froneberger is the associate teacher in one of our three year old program. She has been with School for Young Children for three years. She has a Bachelor of Science Degree in History. Prior to her work at School for Young Children, Mrs. Froneberger was a Children=s Librarian and a Library assistant plus story time assistant. She also works with the Girls Scouts. She enjoys reading and knitting.
 

Felicia Sherman, Four Year Olds, Lead Teacher, Monday-Thursday

Felicia Sherman is one of the lead teachers in our four year old program at School for Young Children. Mrs. Sherman has a degree in Child Development and Family Relations from Western Carolina University. She has been with School for Young Children for six years. Mrs. Sherman has ten years of prior preschool experience. Mrs. Sherman has also worked with at risk children within Guilford County.
 

Linda Browning, Four Year Olds, Assistant Teacher, Monday-Thursday

Linda Browning is one of the assistant teachers in our four year old program at School for Young Children. Mrs. Browning has been with our program for six years. Ms Browning has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism/English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has done graduate work in Library Science and Speech Pathology. In her spare time she volunteers within the community and loves to sail, read, and garden.
 

Carol Puryear, Four Year Olds, Lead Teacher, Monday-Thursday

Carol Puryear is one of the lead teachers in our four year old program at School for Young Children. She has been with our program for four years. Mrs. Puryear has a MA/BS Certificate (emphasis in Christian Education) from Dallas Theological Seminary. Prior to School for Young Children, she has worked as a preschool teacher and director, co-director of a ministry to inner-city children, and dance instructor. She and her husband also served as missionaries in Europe. She loves to read, dance and cook.

Ann Helton, Four Year Olds, Assistant Teacher, Monday-Thursday
Ann Helton is one of the assistant teachers in our four year old program at School for Young Children. She is starting her second year. She has a Bachelor of Science Degree from Iowa State University in Food Science. She has worked as a substitute teacher within the public school system. She has been heavily involved within her community working as PTA President of various schools, teaching Sunday School, and coordinating a program called Mothers of Preschoolers. She loves to cook, camp, backpack, and travel.

Kate Platz, Music, SFYC
Kate Platz is the music teacher at School for Young Children. She has been with the school for ten years. She is a certified Kindermusic teacher. Mrs. Platz has also taught second grade in the public school system for five years. She is the Director of Music at Fellowship Presbyterian Church here in Greensboro.

 

 

 

Kayli Hibbard, Chapel
Kayli Hibbard has been with SFYC for 5 years.  This is her 2nd year teaching chapel.  She has 2 children and loves to cook, enjoys interior design and is an artist.
